Ramshackle Barn Upgraded To Showpiece

Karen Knapstein

IT’S AS DIFFERENT AS NIGHT and day. The remodeled barn as the dilapidated structure that it used to be.

With all work performed by Craig Alleman Construction, the rotten plywood siding and sagging shingle roof were replaced with A.B. Martin 28-gauge steel panels with Sherwin-Williams Coil Coating WeatherXL in Clay.

The maintenance free metal with 40-year warranty will assure the owner has function and beauty for decades to come.

The stonework and decorative woodwork take the barn from functional to exceptional. The stone wainscoting on the porch is Lancaster Stone Company’s Drystack pre-cast stone veneer product with “Gunpowder”-colored mortar color. The stone wainscoting is coated with UGL Drylock Clear Wet Look waterproofer for protection and to keep it looking great.

A new balcony was built to replace the one that had collapsed under the weight of an enormous snow drift. The rough-cut hemlock timber framing was coated with Cabot Australian Timber Oil Wood stain in Natural color. The balcony now has a maintenance-free metal roof to protect the deck against any future issues.

The dilapidated windows were replaced with 36” x 36” maintenance-free vinyl sliders from MI Windows. The windows are flanked by 35” Ply Gem board and batten shutters in Dark Navy to polish off the look.

A cupola built from A.B. Martin panels and a polished copper weathervane top off the remodeled structure.
